Abstract
847,696. Nuclear reactors. A. E. I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No. 4638/58. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Fuel temperature measuring apparatus for a nuclear reactor of the kind in which fuel elements are supported in carriers comprises one-or more thermo-couples inserted in the canning around a fuel element and connected to measuring points outside the reactor via spring-urged contact members in the fuel carrier which engage fixed contact strips on the walls of the fuel passage. As shown, Fig. 1, a fuel carrier comprises graphite pillars 10, 11, and contains a fuel element 1 provided with canning 2 having fins 3 and longitudinal ribs 4, the ends of the fuel 'element being secured to support members 8, 9. Thermo-couples 12, 18, are connected by leads 13, 19, to pairs of spring-pressed plungers 14, 15 and 20, 21 respectively. The pillars 10, 11 are received in guide channels in a fuel passage 46, Fig. 5, defined by graphite blocks 24, 25, between which are located two ceramic blocks 26, 27 which carry fixed contacts 28, 29 and 30, 31. The ceramic blocks are bevelled at 32-35 to compress the plungers. Leads from fixed contacts 28-31 are passed into conduits 44, 45, the ends of which are sealed by glass which fills spaces 36, 37 in the ceramic blocks. In a modification, the fuel carrier comprises a hollow graphite cylinder in which the fuel element is supported by a spider construction, and suitably contoured contact members are carried on spring-urged rocker arms. The thermo-couples may be nickel/chronium or nickel/aluminium, and both spring-urged and fixed contacts may be of platinum, iridium, rhodium &c., ; they should not oxidise excessively at high temperatures, and should be chosen to prevent the development of unwanted thermo-olectric potentials at contact points.
