Abstract

A nuclear fuel subassembly includes a bundle of fuel pins in a tubular wrapper. A first series of grids spaced apart along the length of the subassembly, provide cells for locating all the pins in spaced relationship. A second series of grids alternate with the first-series, and provide dells only for peripheral pins. The pins toward the middle of the bundle are unsupported by the second series of grids. The arrangement is used in a liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactor. The second series of grids prevent bowing of the peripheral pins without restricting coolant flow.
