847,347. Magnetic recording tapes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1958 [Dec. 19, 1957], No. 40541/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic recording medium comprises a non-magnetic backing coated with'a dispersion of magnetic material in a binder which consists of a cured blend of 90-30 parts of an elastomeric copolymer including 55-85 parts butadiene and 45-15 parts of acrylonitrile, and 10-70 parts of an uncured thermosetting resinous condensate of an aldehyde and a phenol. In one example a freshly prepared copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile including modifying agents is blended with the phenolic resin materials and a ketone as solvent, added to an attritor with solvent and the magnetic material and attrited till the latter has a size of 1-2 Á. Curing agents and antioxidants are added, the dispersion is filtered, applied to a non-magnetic tape and cured between 200-350‹ F. The phenolic material may be prepared from specified aldehydes and phenols with basic or acidic catalysts. An agent for improving the compatability of the rubber and phenolic resins such as raw cashew nut shell liquid or compounds of this with phenols may be added, and these and other agents such as phenols or isocyanate substituted phenols maybe included for keying the binder to the tape. The tape may be cellulose acetate or a polyester film of the terephthalic acid-ethylene glycol type, thin paper, or fibrous material. The magnetic material may be γFe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 or natural magnetite and the weight ratio of this to binder may be between 2: 1 and 6: 1. The application of the dispersion to the tape may be by spraying, roll coating or brushing.
