A lawn-mower comprises a cutter unit U mounted on a hand-guided traction so as to be capable of pivoting relative to the traction units about axes which are parallel and transverse respectively to the line of travel of the mower. The traction unit comprises two parts, S and P, pivotally connected at 33 so as to allow relative tilting of the two parts about the axis of the pin 33. The part P comprises a frame F supporting the motor 17 and a driven, groundengaging roller 10, idler rollers 13 and 14 being mounted on extensions of the roller shaft. The roller 10 is formed with a ribbed central portion entrained by a driving belt 15 which is driven from the output shaft of the motor via the pulley 23, belt 22, pulley 21 and shaft 17, clutch 18 and member 16. A brush 61 may be provided also rotated from the motor M and serving to remove clippings from the member 16 and the roller 10. The second part 5 of the traction unit comprises a supporting fork 29 terminating in vertical posts mounting wheels 31 and 32, and accommodating and supporting a large grass box C. The cutting unit U comprises a cutting cylinder 44, which preferably takes the form of a tubular extrusion closed at its ends by plug members, co-operating with a ledger blade, the latter being mounted on a member of arcuate section which serves simultaneously to deflect clippings towards the grass box C. The unit also comprises fore and aft rotary, groundengaging elements 36 and 37, preferably provided with spiral treads for the purpose of compacting the grass as little as possible, the members 37 and 44 being mounted between side plates 38. The forward end of the frame 38 is mounted upon the member 36 so as to be vertically adjustable, thereby varying the height of cut of the cylinder 44. The cutting unit is mounted on the part P of the traction unit by means of arms 53 having ball and socket connections with the part P at one end and being pivotally connected to the shaft of the member 37 at the other end, and is connected to the part S of the traction unit by chains 54 and 56. Movement of levers 58 mounted on the fork 29 provides a means of lifting the cutting unit clear of the ground, or of just lifting one end of the unit. The cutter is driven from the motor M via a flexible extension 17x of the shaft 17. A skid shoe 66 is provided to act as a pivot to facilitate turning the mower.
