Abstract
847,208. Nailing machines. CRITCHLEY, F. Nov. 8, 1958, No. 35926/58. Class 89(3) A nailing machine comprises an assembly including a casing, a driving rod reciprocable within the casing and urged by a spring towards its retracted position, means for holding the rod adjacent the head of a partly driven nail and for allowing retraction of the rod after the nail is fully driven: means for feeding nails into position to be driven and a base adapted to be selectively secured to the assembly to incline the driving rod at an angle to said base to enable the machine to be selectively used for driving nails into material at more than one angle relatively to the surface thereof. In Fig. 10, a base 52 is detachably secured to an assembly comprised by a foot 20 and casing 22 by means of a removable pivot pin 53, and can be secured at a selected angle by means of thumbscrews 57 which engage arcuate slots 56 in a pair of upright plates 55 provided on the base 52. With the base 52 removed, as in Fig. 1, the foot 20 can be placed upon a rafter 46 to enable the machine to be used for the blind nailing of matchboard flooring. A detachable grooved base member 43 is provided for receiving the matchboards. The casing 22 contains the nail driving rod 21 having a head 23 which is struck by a hammer. The rod 21 is retracted by a spring 29 and carries a pawl 32 which co-operates with a rack 31 to prevent retraction of the .rod 21 until, when the nail is fully driven, the pawl 32 clears the rack 31 and swings within a cut away portion 34 of the rack bar to permit the rod 21 to retract. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 cut nails are fed from a magazine 25 into the lower end of the casing 22 by means of a nail feeding mechanism 26 which includes a spring loaded pusher for feeding nails along a nail track into the casing 22. The magazine 25 comprises a case having a series of compartments disposed vertically above the nail track and defined above and below by slidable closing elements 72, Fig. 13, which can be removed to release nails from the compartments. Alternatively for using round nails, the machine may be provided with a nail hopper 75, Figs. 10, 17 and 18 disposed above the nail track 62 and comprising inwardly sloping side, front and rear walls and a plurality of groups of parallel wires or thin rods 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, the groups being disposed at different levels and adjacent groups disposed at substantial angles, preferably right angles, to one another. The wires or rods cause the nails to fall at different rates and to point generally downwardly. Sloping plates 86, 87 are also provided within the hopper. When the nails in the track 62 are used up the spring loaded pusher is detached therefrom and replaced behind the next group of nails which have fallen into the track from the hopper. The nail feeding mechanisms of Figs. I and 10 include an end portion which is detachable to leave a short nail track which can hold a few nails enabling the machine to be used when nailing floorboards close to walls. When using round nails, the front part 36, Fig. 3, of the casing 22 is replaced by a different front part 39, Fig. 4, having a semi-circular groove, and arcuate corner strips 40 are inserted in the groove 38 of the rear part 37 of the casing 22.
