[Also in Group XXXIV] A brake or clutch comprises one or a plurality of friction segments, each mounted in an opening in a carrier plate by yieldable means permitting limited circumferential movement of the segment relative to the plate. A carrier plate 12, splined for axial movement, has circumferentially-spaced openings 20 each containing a friction segment 10 of a friction material 36 in a cup 38, 40 formed with a central opening containing a button 30 clamped by a flange 42 between the cup base 38 and the material 36. Two such segments 10 are fastened together back-to-back, Figs. 3 and 4, by a rivet 46, the buttons 30 being situated in a central opening 28 of a mounting-member 26, Fig. 5, having openings 32 forming resilient deformable edges 34 which engage the rounded ends 22 of the openings 20. On clutch engagement, friction tends to move the segments circumferentially, such movement being transmitted to the plate 12 via mounting-members 26, and the edges 34 deforming to dampen any vibrations set up. The straight ends 24 of the openings 20 limit the circumferential movement of the segments 10 which are also prevented from rotating by a projection 48 on each cup base 38 engaging an oblong opening 50 in plate 12. The mounting-members 26 may be each formed with edges 34 of different spring rates to reduce the possibility of encountering a vibration common to each pad resulting in chatter. In Fig. 6, not shown, the member 26 is curved to hold each cup 38, 40 from the plate 12 to permit limited axial movement of the pads.
