Abstract
847,041. Passenger-carrying belt conveyers. STEPHENS-ADAMSON MFG CO. June 23, 1958 [July 10, 1957], No. 20003/58. Class 78 (1). In a passenger transporting system including a conveyer belt presenting a relatively smooth transport surface and a stationary passenger platform at one or both ends of the transport surface, a landing member which is rockable about a horizontal axis is interposed between each platform and the belt, the landing member having a pointed sealing edge and projecting over and closely adjacent the transport surface, stop means being provided for limiting the upward and downward rocking movements of the landing member, and resilient means being arranged to bias the sealing edge towards the transport surface. As shown, a reversibly driven endless belt 12 transports passengers between upper and lower landing members. The lower landing member comprises a landing plate 34 of metal having a smaller coefficient of friction than that of the belt 12, and a member 38 of rubber or other material having a coefficient of friction equal to or greater than that of the belt 12, the plate 34 and the member 38 being secured together and to a plate 82 by bolts 86. The plate 82 is welded to a supporting plate 80 which is pivotally mounted by lugs 90 and pivot pin 94 to a pair of stationary lugs 96 having slotted holes 92a to receive the pin 94. The plate 34 of the lower landing member is arranged as shown at an angle to the plane in which the belt travels, whereas the plate of the upper landing member (not shown), which is otherwise similarly constructed to the lower landing member, is arranged in the plane of the belt. The plate 34 has a curved portion 44 arranged to prevent a passenger's heel 76 being caught on the edge 36 of the plate. It is said that owing to the high coefficient of friction of member 38 foreign matter is normally prevented from entering between the landing member and the belt. Should this happen, however, the plate will be rocked and a microswitch 58 is operated to switch off the driving motor of the belt. The micro-switch is operated by a lever 60 having an adjustable switchactuating bolt 138 on its outer end and secured at its inner end to one of the lugs 90. The landing member is maintained with its printed edge closely adjacent the belt 12 and its forward end in contact with a platform 81 by springs 144 which act on hooked links 140 engaged with brackets 154 welded to the plate 80. A stop plate 102 is welded to a bracket 100 at each end of plate 80 for engagement with an adjustable stop screw 106 which is set to maintain the edge 36 just clear of the belt 12. A pair of bolts 120, passed through apertures in the plate 80 and a stationary plate 98 respectively, and each provided with adjusting nuts 126, limits the rocking movement of the edge 36 away from the belt 12 to approximately an eighth of an inch. Specification 787,842 is referred to.
