846,834. Type printing telegraphy. UNION THERMOELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1959 [Jan. 16, 1958], No. 1693/59. Class 40(3). [Also in Group XVI] A word-counter comprises a counting mechanism electro-mechanically controlled by the output of a non-inductive device which is connected to the signal line, the output current of the device being responsive to the signal current. In Fig. 7, a low resistance 154, e.g. 15 ohms, is connected in the signal and the voltage developed across it fed to a transistor 100. A pair of electromagnet coils 68 receive the transistor output. A continuously rotating motor 60 drives a first shaft and, through a clutch, Fig. 5 (not shown) a second shaft which carries a member 146, Fig. 6, and gearing which drives the counting mechanism. Assuming that five letters and a space make a word, the second shaft must rotate once for every six characters received, and the member 146 is provided with six equally spaced recesses 152 into which fingers 92 or 94 may fall thus preventing movement of member 146 and stopping the counting mechanism. Movement of the fingers is controlled by the electromagnet 66; when there is a signal on the line armature 72 pivots about stud 74 and moves arm 82. A spring 76 returns the system to the position shown for no line signal. With the direction of rotation indicated a complete code character comprising a start element, code elements, and a stop element, allow the member 146 to make one-sixth of a revolution, the fingers 92, 94 riding on the periphery of member 146 and dropping into the recesses according to the condition of the line.
