Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula :-<FORM:0846611/IV(b)/1> wherein R and R1 are the same or different and are alkyl radicals, and the preparation thereof by the alkylation of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0846611/IV(b)/2> or by the nitration of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0846611/IV(b)/3> or by the hydrolysis of salts of the general formula <FORM:0846611/IV(b)/4> where R2 represents a hydrolysable atom or group and X an anion 2-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-6-nitroquinoline is prepared by the nitration of 2-ethyl-4-hydro-xyquinoline ; 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - 4 - quinolone by hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide of 4-amino-1-ethyl-quinaldiniumiodide, in turn prepared from 4-aminoquinaldine and diethyl sulphate followed by treatment with potassium iodide ; and 4-amino-1:2-dimethyl-6-nitroquinolinium bromide from dimethyl sulphate, sodium bromide and 4-amino-6-nitro-quinaldine, in turn prepared from 4-chloro-6-nitro-quinaldine, acetamide, phenol and ammonia.ALSO:Antibacterial compositions (for oral or parenteral use) comprise as active ingredient or ingredients at least one of the compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0846611/VI/1> where R and R1 are the same or different alkyl groups in admixture with an inert diluent or carrier. The compositions may include aqueous and non-aqueous solutions or suspensions, dispersible powders and granules, creams and ointments, tablets, pills, pessaries, bougies, mixtures with foodstuffs and mixtures with solid diluents for admixture with foodstuffs and may contain other known therapeutic agents.
