Abstract
Para-xylene is prepared by the aromatisation of diisobutylene, triiso-butylene, their hydrogenation products or mixtures of such compounds over a solid aromatisation catalyst at 450-650 DEG C. and 0,4-0,9 vol. of liquid hydrocarbon feed per vol. of catalyst per hour in the presence of at least 30% by volume of nitrogen and/or methane based on the total volume of hydrocarbon feed plus diluent. Preferably 65-80% of nitrogen or methane is used. Suitable catalysts are the oxides of Group VI metals which may be supported on a Group III metal oxide and activated with oxides of alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals and/or rare earth metals and/or zinc. They may also be mixed with metallic platinum or palladium or in the form of mixed compounds or mixed with oxides of titanium, zirconium, thorium or vanadium. Preferred catalysts contain 5-40% chromia, 1-10% potassia, 0,5-5% ceria and 93,5-45% gamma-alumina. Water vapour is undesirable and should be kept below 0,5% by volume of the reactants.
