Abstract

846,568. Abrasive wheels. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 6, 1956 [Nov. 7, 1955], No. 33852/56. Class 60. An abrasive wheel comprises an annulus of juxtaposed radially-extending flap sections 10 of abrasive sheet material rigidly bonded together over an area 11 extending across their entire width for at least “ inch radially outward from the inner end of each section so as to form a rigidly reinforced inner vein in the annulus. The flap sections, which may consist of a drill cloth backing sheet having an abrasive coating stuck thereon by cured phenol-aldehyde bond and sandsize adhesive coatings, are die-cut with notches 12, 12a, 13, 13a having rounded corners to reduce stress concentrations due to centrifugal force. The annular structure is built up by first pressing the flap sections together in a U-section support and adhesive is applied to unite the flap sections over the area 11. After removal from the support, the structure is formed into an annular shape and further adhesive applied. Suitable adhesives are cured epoxide, polyester, alkyd or phenolic resins. The notches 12, 12a, 13, 13a form grooves 14, 14a, 15, 15a which receive rings 18, 18a, 19, 19a on flanges 17, 17a. A cylindrical hub 16 is fitted between the flanges and the whole clamped between nuts 23, 23a on a shaft 22, in which is a sleeve 21. More or fewer than two grooves may be provided ; if no grooves are used, reinforcing washers of high tensile strength such as glass-reinforced plastic or metal may take the place of the flanges, 17, 17a and are stuck to the lateral surface of the wheel with a high shear strength adhesive. More than one wheel may be mounted on a single shaft. The wheel may be carried by a counterweighted pivoted lever so that it operates in succession on a series of workpieces on a travelling conveyer passing beneath the wheel. The speed of rotation of the wheel is in excess of the critical speed at which shreds or threads of the flap section are seen to be emitted.
