Abstract

846,496. Electromagnetic relays. PRIESEMUTH, W. Sept. 9, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956; Dec. 5, 1956; Aug. 5, 1957], No. 28327/57. Class 38 (5). When the coil 2 of an electromagnetic relay is energized a piston plunger 5 is attracted into the cylinder in the core 1 against the action of a compression spring 6 and air from the cylinder escapes through the valve 3, 4. When the coil is de-energized the spring returns the plunger but the valve 3, 4 is closed by the suction as it rises so that the operation is delayed as air leaks slowly into the cylinder or is let in through a control vent (not shown). Contacts 8, 9 are operated by a head 7 on the plunger. In Figs. 3 and 4 the relay operates as a self-interrupter for a flickering lamp with normally closed contacts 13, 14 on spring strips 11, 12 in series with the coil 2 and the head 7 slidable on a rod 10 of the plunger 5 against the bias of an adjusting spring 15. On operation the head 7 is held by the ends of the strips 11, 12 until the " ploy " is taken up, when the head is forced between the strips to open the contacts. On release the strips retain the head between them until it is engaged by the top of the plunger. In Fig. 5a a similar interrupter has a head 18 slidable on rod 10 with two arms 19 each passing between two spring contacts 20 and arranged to be forced between buttons on the strips so as to separate the contacts rapidly when the plunger is attracted into the cylinder. In Fig. 8 the relay is mounted in the base of an incandescent lamp which is thereby caused to flicker. The plunger operates, with lost motion, a snap-action arrangement comprising a leaf spring 34 carrying the contacts and a compression spring biasing the leaf spring to either side of a centre position. The coil may be in series or parallel with the lamp and in the latter case double contacts can be used so that the lamp energizing contacts can be arranged to close first.
