846,404. Gauging shape of gear teeth. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 25, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 37314/57. Class 106 (2). A device for testing the profile of the surface of an involute gear tooth p comprises a probe n mounted to move on the circumference of a circle whose centre O lies on the circumference of the base circle of the involute curve defining the tooth surface, the probe n being constrained to move in a plane perpendicular to the generators of the tooth being tested. The probe n is mounted on a frame j, k, l, m, the arm jm of which rests on the tip of a nearby tooth and is adjusted, by use of a semi-silvered mirror mounted on the arm, to lie along a radius of the gear-wheel. This is accomplished by adjusting the arm until the reflection of the teeth shown in the mirror coincides with the direct view of other teeth obtained through the unsilvered portion. The frame is also angularly adjusted to lie in the required plane, and the length ln is made equal to the length mo. Deviations of the probe from the circle are indicated electrically or mechanically and recorded on a graph on which the theoretically correct movements have already been plotted, thus giving an indication of the shape of the tooth under test.
