Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (a) one or more non-ionic, anionic, or amphoteric, detergents, and (b) a water soluble sulphomethylcellulose, preferably in an amount 0.02-10% by weight of the composition. (a) may be a sulphonated oil, a fatty acid glyceride sulphonate, a sulphonate or sulphate of a fatty acid alkanolamide, a sulphated polyalkenoxy derivative, a primary or sec. alkyl sulphate, a primary alkyl sulphonate, an alkylaryl sulphonate, soap, an alkanolamide, a sugar ester; an ethylene oxide condensate of an alkylphenol, a fatty alcohol, acid or amide, or of an alkyl or alkylaryl sulphonamide, or the corresponding propylene oxide condensates; a N - alkylated aminocarboxylic acid, a N-dicarboxymethylalkylamine, an alkylbetaine, a sulphobetaine, a carboxymethylated fatty acid monoamide of a polyamine, a sulphated higher amine, a sulphated hydroxyalkyl derivative of higher alkylamines or 2-alkylimidazolines, or a N-alkylated aminoalkanesulphonic acid. In examples, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, soap, and an adduct of nonylphenol with 10 units of ethylene oxide are used. The sulpho-methylcellulose (b) preferably has a degree of substitution of 0.15-0.35 and may be used in either the crude or purified form, usually as the sodium salt. Alkali metal phosphates, poly-phosphates, carbonates, silicates, and perborates, and sodium sulphate may also be incorporated in the compositions, which may be produced in either liquid or powder form.
