Abstract
845,654. Momentum power-storing apparatus. CLARKE, A. V. Dec. 9, 1958 [March 17, 1958], No. 8464/58. Class 10. A flywheel 13, Figs. 1, 2, which drives a generator 62 through chain gearing 54 ... 56, 59 ... 61 and a clutch 58, is energized by a mechanism comprising a driving shaft 22, a cam shaft 25, reduction gearing 34, an electric motor 35 and tension springs 44. The shaft 25, which is chain driven from a reduction gear shaft 33, mounts two cam discs 39, Fig. 2, each of which has two cam projections 40 per face so arranged that a 45-degree spacing ensues. Each disc face is associated with a spring (168) loaded pivotally suspended lever 26 which carries one end of a chain 47 and a sprocket wheel 51, the chain, which is fixed at its other end to the mechanism frame at 53, passing around a sprocket 49 mounted on a shaft 50 fixed to the mechanism framework 27, the sprocket 51, the sprocket 24 of a one-way clutch 23 mounted on the shaft 22 and a sprocket 52 carried at one end of a lever 43. The other end of the lever mounts one end of a spring 44 which is fixed at 45 to framework 46. In operation, cam shaft rotation causes sequential pivotal movement of the levers 26 each driven movement or impulse of a lever effecting tensioning of spring 44 through chain 47 which moves associated clutch sprocket 24 in its free-running direction. Each lever receives two impulses per shaft (25) revolution and on release of a lever by a projection 40 the spring 44 actuates the lever 43 such that the chain 47 rotates the shaft 22 and hence the flywheel through the clutch 23. At the operational speed of the flywheel the motor 35 may be cut out and the springs 44 detensioned through moving notched bars 68, Fig. 2, so that notches 68b engage pins 68a any energy taken from the wheel being replaced by an electric motor 63, Fig. 1, driving through chain gearing 64 ... 66 and a clutch 67. The generator 62 may partially supply the motor 63. In a modified mechanism the springs 44 are replaced by spiral springs coiled in drums coaxial with and secured to the clutch sprockets 24. In another modification each lever 26 moves a rod 79, Fig. 3, which tensions springs 75 mounted between a clutch element 71 and a drum housing 72 attached through a rod to the mechanism frame. In yet another modification having spiral springs coiled in drums each spring is energized from its associated lever 26 through pawl-andratchet mechanism.
