Abstract

845,523. Recording-apparatus. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 9, 1956 [Oct. 17, 1955], No. 30799/56. Class 106 (4). [Also in Group XVI] Recording apparatus comprises a recording paper 50 advanced uniformly in one direction with a stylus 42 moving transversely in wiping contact therewith, a driving roller 30 and a removable drive reel mechanism 20 having a spindle 66 supporting a roll 51 of paper, the apparatus having a pair of plates 21, 22 with slots 91, 92 for guiding the paper along a circular path into rocking engagement with the stylus 42, whereby the record paper is prevented from causing damage to the stylus during rapid insertion into or removal from the recording apparatus. To recharge the apparatus with paper, the mechanism 20 is removed and old and new rolls are interchanged on the spindle 66, after pushing aside a spring 71, which retains the roll against a plate 74 and acts as a friction drag to keep the paper taut when being drawn off the roll 51 by the driving-roller 30 during operation. Paper 50 from the new roll 51 is arranged round a guide-roller 64, over a platen 60 and between L-shaped edge guides each side of a top-plate. The spindle 66, roller 64, platen 60, an idler roller 68 and the top plate are all carried between two side-plates 61, 62 from which projects a hinge-pin 69. When replacing the mechanism 20 in the apparatus, the slots 91, 92 in the side-plates 21, 22 guide the hinge-pin 69 into opposed holes and the need to tilt the mechanism to avoid the platen 60 fouling the driving-roller 30 safeguards the stylus 42, with which contact is made gently by rocking the mechanism 20 to raise the idler roller 68 and platen 60, with the paper 50 intervening, into engagement with the driving-roller 30 and stylus 42, respectively, in which position the mechanism is retained by a locking-device 89, 120. The mechanism 20 is so balanced that when the lock 89, 120 is released the platen 60 falls away from the stylus 42, which is prevented from falling too by a cross-bar 27. An unevenly wound roll 51 is maintained in alignment with the rollers 30, 68 by guide-plates 95, 96 mounted on the plates 61, 62 by screw pivots 97, 98 and held in position by spring-mounted pins entering holes in the plates.
