Abstract
845,394. Electric motors. LANDIS & GYR A.G. Oct. 17, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 33270/58. Class 35. The soft iron rotor of a synchronous motor has a series of radial teeth 2 polarized by a fixed, disc-shaped magnet 12 which is axially magnetized to provide twice as many sector-shaped alternate poles as there are rotor teeth. The 'stator has no teeth. In operation the magnet poles are alternately strengthened and weakened by the alternating flux from stator coil 11, but the magnet is of a ferrite (Ferroxdure) having a reversible permeability of about unity and is not demagnetized by the stator flux. When the motor is de-energized the 8-pole rotor lies in a position bridging alternate pairs of the 16-pole magnet as shown in Fig. 2. On energization, one pole of each pair is weakened and the other strengthened which causes the rotor to move towards the stronger pole. Reverse rotation is prevented by a known lock comprising a gear 13 on the rotor engaging, by specially shaped teeth, a gear 15 lying in an aperture in the magnet.
