Abstract

Normally water-soluble polymers predominantly composed of recurring hydroxyamidinoethylene and carbamylethylene linkages in the ratio 1:100 to 10:1 and of molecular weight greater than 100,000 are used in making paper of improved dry strength. Cyanoethylene linkages may also be included. In an example, a resin was prepared by dissolving 5 gms. of an 80:20 acrylamide:acrylonitrile polymer of mol. wt. 500,000 in 200 ml. of water, adding 0,655 gm. of hydroxylamine hydrochloride, adjusting the pH value to 6,8 with dilute Na OH, and heating for 30 minutes at 90 DEG C.
