Abstract
Mixtures of hydrocarbons containing n-paraffins and normally liquid n-olefines are resolved by passing through a molecular sieve at 175-450 DEG F., withdrawing unadsorbed hydrocarbons including cis n-olefines, passing a normally gaseous olefine into the adsorption zone whereby n-paraffins are desorbed and finally purging the adsorption zone and recovering the olefines thereby desorbed. Preferably the adsorption is carried out in the vapour phase at 0-400 psig and a space velocity of 0,1-5 vol./vol./hr. and the n-paraffins are desorbed at the same temperature using propylene. The purging may be performed with steam at 220-350 DEG F. or an inert gas, such as ammonia or by evacuation; if steam desorption is employed the sieve is reactivated by drying. The feed may be a vaporised naphtha fraction e.g. boiling in the range 85-450 DEG F. or a catalytic reformate. Cyclic or branched chain hydrocarbons are not adsorbed.
