845,229. Dictating-machines. DICTAPHONE CORPORATION. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 4, 1956], No. 27789/57. Class 40 (2). A marker for a dictating-machine comprises a slip of heat-sensitive material and an electricallyheated marking-device. Fig. 1 shows a dictating-machine in which an endless belt record 12 moves under a recording-head 16 which traverses the belt in the direction of the arrow 18. Attached to the recording-head carriage is an arm 30 carrying a pivoted housing 26 which is spring-urged towards the top heat-sensitive slip 22 of a pad 21. Within the housing is a block 32 (Fig. 3) which has two heater wires 40 and 42 which can be heated selectively by pressing one end or the other of the switch 24 (Fig. 1) and thus marking the slip 22 in one of two positions. Each heater wire is connected across a capacitor which is itself in series with a resistor across a source of D.C. current supply. When the switch is closed to energize a heater the capacitor discharges through the heater wire and the value of the series resistor is such that the current permitted to flow thereafter is insufficient to produce significant heating of the wire. The marks on the slip are therefore of uniform intensity. The housing 26 may be raised to permit withdrawal of the slip. In a modification a single heater wire is used with two different values of capacitor to produce a single mark of variable intensity.
