Abstract
845,209. Diaphragm pumps. PLENTY & SON Ltd. May 5, 1958 [May 13, 1957], No. 15132/57. Class 102(1). A metal diaphragm 18 is welded at 42 to the casing forming a pump chamber 24 provided with inlet and outlet valves 30, 32. The diaphragm is actuated hydraulically by a ram 14 operating in a labyrinth gland 34 and is supported by grids 46, 48 which prevent reverse bending, the diaphragm operating between two degrees of convexity. Several pumps are arranged in a common block 10 and the rams 14 are driven by a motor 20. The pump is intended for circulating in a nuclear power plant pure water which may become radio-active. Should leakage occur through the diaphragm a device 36, 38, which may be a radiation counter, stops the motor 20. The diaphragms are made of high carbon content heat-treated steel and have expansion rings 44 pressed therein.
