Abstract
845,132. Making gilled tubes; welding by fusion; coiling. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 38829/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] A heat exchanger tube is formed by welding looped wire to the surface of a metal tube. The wire 2, Figs. 1 and 2, is coiled around a mandrel to form loops of say oval or triangular form. A wire 10 passed through the loops is fixed to the tube 1 which is rotated and moved axially to apply the loops helically around the tube. The loops pass by a gas, e.g. argon, shielded metal arc welding head 5 which forms a fillet 8 on one side of the loops or alternatively welds all the base of the loops to the tube. The tube is preheated by an induction heater having a watercooled coil 6. In a modification, Fig. 6, the welding is performed by a gas shielded tungsten arc welding head 5 and a filler wire 3a to supply weld metal is applied around the tube 1 with the loops 2. The wire and tube may be steel, stainless steel, brass or copper.
