Abstract

845,014. Lifesaving appliances. FRANKENSTEIN & SONS (MANCHESTER) Ltd., P., SILVERSTONE, J., and WRIGHT, I. B. March 10, 1958 [March 19, 1957], No. 8903/57. Class 77. [Also in Groups XX, XXVII and XXIX]. An immersion-responsive actuator for a valve or other device comprises a mass of initially compressed porous material which swells on the absorption of free liquid to release a spring- loaded pin. As shown to automatically effect the release of compressed gas from a container 10, Fig. 1 to inflatable life-saving equipment, such as life jackets, dinghies or rafts, a plurality of washers 27 of, e.g. compressed methyl cellulose sponge which may be impregnated with a gasgenerated chemical or alternatively with a wetting agent, such as alkyl aryl sulphonate are mounted on a rod 28 in a body 13 screw-threadedly attached to an adaptor 11 connecting the container to the equipment. The rod 28 is formed with a head 30 which when the actuator is inoperative urges spring fingers 21 on a plate 22 abutting a shoulder 23 of the body into a recess 25 of a block 20 secured to a spring-loaded pin 15. On the actuator being immersed, ingress of water takes place through apertures 31 causing downward movement of the washers 27 and the head 30 to be removed from between the spring fingers 21. The spring-loaded pin is then released and either unseats a non-return valve closing the container or pierces a frangible diaphragm. To prevent undesired "firing" of the actuator a sleeve fitted over the lower part of the body is formed with apertures which may be brought into and out of register with the apertures 31. To permit of manual operation, the rod 28 is anchored to a cap 32 which is normally held on the body cap 26 by a circlip 33. On removing the cap 32 the spring-loaded pin 15 is released, the cap 32 if necessary being remotely removed by means of, e.g. a Bowden cable. In a modification, the spring fingers are replaced by a sleeve 38, Fig. 4, having slots 41 which co-operate with lugs 42 formed on the head 30 to hold a circlip 40 in a recess 43 in the block 20.
