Abstract

844,990. Firearms; ramming mechanisms. BOFORS A. B. Nov. 12, 1958 [Dec. 14, 1957], No. 36373/58. Class 92. In a firearm a ramming lug 12 Fig. 1 actuated by spring means (not shown) is cocked by a buffer 4 on a cross-bar 3 Figs. 1, 3 adapted to slide in grooves 2 in a non-recoiling frame 1, the ends of the cross-bar being provided with oblique bearing surfaces 5 for co-acting with oblique surfaces 6 on bars 7 fixed to the recoiling parts of the firearm. The arrangement is such that the cross-bar 3 is urged to tilt during the cocking movement as shown in Fig. 3 but can only tilt when it reaches oblique widened portions 15, 16 of the grooves 2, in which position the ramming lug 12 has been cocked. The crossbar also slides on two rods 8 having forward stops 9 and springs 14 which urge the cross-bar forwardly. In the tilted position the bars 7 with the faces 6, 5 no longer abutting, can move further rearwardly without the cross-bar partaking of this movement. During run-out, the ends of the cross-bar 3 will first rest against the sides of the bars 7 as shown in Fig. 3, the spring 14 will then tilt the cross-bar causing the surfaces 5, 6 to abut and move the cross-bar back to the initial position. The rear ends of the rods 8 are pivotally connected to levers 10 fixed to a shaft 11 supported in the brush casing 17 Fig. 4 mounted for elevation about a pivot 18. A guide rail on the mounting 19 is curved about a centre 21 and a roller 23 carried by a lever 22 on the shaft 11 bears against the rail. Because of the position of the centre of curvature 21 in relation to the pivot 18, the roller 23 will move rearwardly in relation to the shaft 11 when the elevation of the firearm is increased. This will cause the rods 8 and the stops 9 to move forwardly and permit an increased ramming movement of the lug 12, thus providing the necessary greater amount of energy for ramming the round in the elevated position.
