Abstract

844,881. Oxygenating blood. FERROSAN A. S. Aug. 26, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26855/57. Class 81(2). A blood oxygenator comprises a bag of pliable synthetic plastic foil and having a track for the passage of blood between an inlet and an outlet, the track being formed by joining opposite surfaces of the bag along predetermined lines. Two sheets of polyethylene are welded together along edges 2, 3, 4, 5 to form a flat bag 1. The sheets are also sealed together along a line to 6 form with one edge 3 an outlet portion 7, along a line 14 to form a stepwise sedimentation portion, along lines 11, 12, 13 to form a trap 16, along lines 8, 9 to form an inlet portion 10 and along lines 15, 18 to form with an edge 5, a reservoir 19 for venous blood. The lines of seating 13, 15 also define a chamber 17 in which is located a pad which may consist of fibres or threads of polyethylene and which is treated with an antifoaming agent. In use the upper corners 30, 31 of the bag 1 are cut off and a supporting rod is inserted through the top of the bag. The sealed edges are also cut along dotted lines 20, 21, 22 and stoppers are inserted in the openings thus formed. The stopper in the outlet portion 7 incorporates a filter and a tube through which blood oxygenated in the bag can pass to the patient. Venous blood from the reservoir 19 is pumped into the inlet portion 10 through a tube in the second stopper, oxygen being supplied through another tube in the stopper. Venous blood from the patient passes through tubes in the third stopper to the reservoir 19 which has a hole 29 permitting the escape of air. In alternative constructions the flat sides of the bag are sealed together along lines of various configurations the reservoir 19 being omitted.
