Abstract
Dispersions of pigments in liquid vehicles are prepared by mixing pigment, a binder and a volatile solvent in a container by the application of shear forces at a rate of shear not less than 2000 secs-1 and diluting the dispersion with additional binder by evaporating at least some of the solvent from the dispersion whilst the latter is in a state of shear and simultaneously adding binder or vehicle to dilute the dispersion, such evaporation and dilution being continued until the dispersion contains sufficient binder to prevent re-agglomeration or re-aggregation of the pigment on further thinning and not more solvent than is required in the completed dispersion. A partial vacuum may be created in the mixing vessel before dispersion is commenced. A suitable apparatus is a twin contra-revolving sigma-bladed horizontal water-cooled and steam-jacketed paste or plastic mixer. Rates of shear from 2000 to above 100,000 secs-1 may be employed. Examples are given of dispersing Milori blue in a solution of alkyd resin in white spirit, and in a polymerized rosin dissolved in toluol. Heat treated linseed oil may also be used as a vehicle.
