Abstract

844,648. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. JENKINS & CO. Ltd., R., and OLDFIELD, G. H. Oct. 16, 1958 [Oct. 16, 1957], No. 32351/57. Class 123(1) The cover 10 of a cylindrical pressure vessel 9 is held thereon by a channel-section clamping ring 11 which is mounted rotatably on a continuous flange of a member 12 welded around the vessel rim and has its outer flange 19 castellated to provide tongues adapted to pass through and, on rotation of the ring, engage behind similar tongues 15 on a flange of a member 14 welded to the cover rim. The vessel is sealed by a flexible member 16 disposed between the members 12, 14. To prevent the cover being opened before its internal pressure is fully vented two safety devices which are operated in succession are provided. The first (not shown) consists of a locking catch which prevents the clamping ring from rotating and which is only releasable by a lever actuating a venting cock. The second device, which forms the subject of the invention, consists of an axially movable locking 'bar 21 slidably mounted in a housing 22 secured to the clamping ring 11. The bar 21 is urged inwardly by a spring 23 and at its inner end has an extension 24 which lies a short distance behind the flange member 14 when the cover is sealed. When the first safety device has been operated and the ring 11 turned to release the cover, any residual pressure in the vessel moves the cover outwardly against the stop 24 as shown in Fig. 3, the pressure being released as the seal is broken. The bar 21 may then be lifted by its handle 29 and is held clear by a spring-loaded latch 31 whilst the cover 10 is opened completely. When the cover is replaced and the clamping ring turned to its locked position an arm 35 on the cover trips the latch and the spring 23 returns the bar 21 to its operative position. Three or more spaced locking bars are usually provided. In a modification, the bars are withdrawn by solenoids energised simultaneously. Specifications 682,779 and 725,825 are referred to.
