Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil, 2.5-33 weight per cent of anhydrous calcium acetate and 0.1-10.0 weight per cent of an amine (or poly alkyleneoxy derivative thereof)of formula: <FORM:0844426/III/1> where R, R1 and R11 are C1-C18 alkyl radicles, the total number of carbon atoms in R, R1 and R11 being 16-36, R111 is a C2-C4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radicle and x is 0-10. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil or a mixture of both. Synthetic oils mentioned are esters of monobasic acids (e.g. C8 oxo alcohol ester of C8 oxo acid), esters of dibasic acids (e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate), esters of glycols (e.g. C13 oxo acid diester of tetraethylene glycol), complex esters, esters of phosphoric acid, halocarbon oils, silicones, polyglycols and mixtures of these. The composition may also contain oxidation inhibitors (e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine), viscosity index improvers (e.g. polyisobutylene), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. sorbitan monooleate), pour depressants, dyes and detergents. The calcium acetate may be formed in situ by reaction between calcium oxide or hydroxide and acetic acid in presence of the lubricating oil, followed by heating at about 300-500 DEG F. until complete dehydration occurs. The composition, which has wear-inhibiting properties, may be a grease or a liquid lubricant, according to the proportion of calcium acetate employed. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described which contain calcium acetate and an amino compound chosen from Primene JM-T (C18-C24 tert. alkyl primary amines), 5-amino-5,13-dimethyl-hexadecane, <FORM:0844426/III/2> and <FORM:0844426/III/3>
