Abstract

844,217. Electric indicating systems. AMES CO., W. R. May 17, 1957, No. 15811/57. Class 40 (1). The moisture content of soil is measured by means of a stake which may be inserted in a tapered hole in the ground and which consists of a number of spaced conductivity measuring cells each having a pair of electrodes in a moisture-absorbing material. As shown (Fig. 2), the stake consists of a central insulating tube 15 on which are the cells 12 spaced from each other by spacers 14 and insulating rings 13. Each cell consists of a pair of ring-shaped electrodes 19, 20 mounted on an insulating sleeve 21 which is secured to the core 15. The electrodes are surrounded by an hygroscopic material which may be gypsum. The spacing material may also be gypsum. Connections to the electrodes are made by a multi-core cable which enters the central tube through a screwed cup 25 and the individual cores of which are led to the appropriate electrodes through a longitudinal slot 16 in the central tube. A shaped end piece 28 is also provided. In a further embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the electrodes consist of concentric cylindrical meshes and the spacers of polystyrene making insulating elements 13 unnecessary. The resistance of the individual cells is measured by the arrangement of Fig. 6 in which a part of the output of oscillator 59 is tapped by potentiometer 61, voltmeter 63 being connected in circuit to show that the output is the same and is then applied through an ammeter 64 to the conductivity cell 12 selected by switch 67. Ammeter 64 and voltmeter 63 may be incorporated in a compound instrument with a single needle.
