A work guide for nibbling or stamping-machines, wherein a saddle 29 displaceable on guide-rails 19 on an upper cantilever-arm 15 of the machine is arranged below the arm 15, and is provided with guides for a cross-slide 43 which carries holding devices for the work 60, a table 74 for carrying copying - templets is axially displaceable and fixable on a lower-arm 11 of the machine. The lower arm 11 also carries a matrixholder 12 in which a matrix 13 is interchangeably mounted. The upper cantilever-arm carries a motor 16 and gear mechanism 17 for driving a vertically-displaceable nibbling-tool 18, e.g. of cylindrical form. The machine is provided with a templetattachment for use in cutting circular apertures, and also with scales for the measurement of longitudinal and transverse movement of the saddle 29 and cross-slide 43 respectively. In feeding the workpiece 60 to the tool 18 when cutting circular apertures, an adjustable clamping member 71 mounted on the cross-slide 43 carries a depending guide-pin 73 to engage a copying templet. The copying templet is mounted on the stencil table 74, which moves on rollers 87 running on guide rails 88. A lever 100, Fig. 6, pivotable about a point 101 on an adjustable bearing 102 attached to the templettable 74 is engaged by the guide-pin 73 entering a bore 105 of a radially-adjustable block 104, so that the work traces a circular path. The lever 100 may be provided with a scale. When adjusting the work to obtain the desired position for the centre-point of a circular slot to be cut, readings are taken on a scale 75 and a scale 81, Fig. 3, the centre-hairs 97, 98 of cursors 76, 82 respectively, Fig. 5, being used. In stamping-out rectangular recesses 60<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, using a dimensioned drawing, when the work moves longitudinally relative to the punch, one or other of a pair of hairlines 78, 79, spaced apart on the cursor 76 by a distance equal to the diameter of the tool 18, must be read against the scale 75 according to the direction of travel of the work. Symbols 78<SP>1</SP>, 79<SP>1</SP> indicate the edge of the tool 18 to which each hairline applies. With the work fed transversely of the tool 18, the scale 81 mounted on the slide 43 is used, the scale being provided with a similarly-marked stationary-cursor 82.
