Abstract

A catalyst comprises Ni- or Co-subsulphide (e.g Ni3S2) supported on a porous support consisting substantially of corundum; preferably the subsulphide comprises 1-10 wt. % based on the corundum. The catalyst may be prepared by converting activated alumina to corundum at 1250-1350 DEG C. and, subsequently forming the subsulphide thereon, preferably by soaking the corundum in a solution of a Ni or Co sulphur-oxyacid salt (e.g. NiSO4) which is directly reducible to sulphide, drying the impregnated support and converting the salt to subsulphide at 300-500 DEG C. by means of H2 or an H2-containing gas such as coal gas.
