Abstract

Aliphatic primary amines are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of C8- 22 aliphatic nitriles, the yield of said amines being improved by the independent inclusion, with the nitrile reactant and catalyst or catalyst support, of a polar solid absorbent which will not react with the amine formed. The polar solid absorbent is defined as a solid absorbent in which the inter-atomic bonds are appreciably ionic in character, e.g. alumina. The hydrogenation may be carried out under a partial pressure of ammonia.
