Abstract
844,057. Granulating by extrusion. WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. July 18, 1956 [July 18, 1955], No. 22296/56. Class 87(2). Apparatus for granulating plastic masses comprises two relatively rotatable concentric drums one of which is perforated and the other carries ribs projecting into the space between the two drums ; each of said ribs having a leading face inclined rearwardly with respect to the direction of relative rotation of the ribbed drum and a top face which lies close to the wall of the perforated drum, each leading face and top face meeting in an obtuse angle. The plastic mass is introduced laterally into the space between the outer drum 3 and the inner drum 2 ; the portion of the drum nearer to the inlet being temperature controlled to obtain the required plasticity. The mass is fed forward by the ribs 1 and is worked outwardly by the inclined surfaces of these ribs and forced into the perforations in the drum 3 and cut off by the obtuse angles. The ribs may be helical or chevron-shaped. The inner drum 2 may be movable axially to facilitate removal from the perforated drum 3 for cleaning &c. The drums may be cylindrical or conical and alternatively the outer one may be ribbed and the inner one perforated.
