Abstract

In the manufacture of macromalecular polycarbonates by polycondensing an organic dihydroxy compound with phosgene and/or a chlorocarbonate of an organic dihydroxy compound (the free dihydroxy compound and/or the chlorocarbonate containing an aromatic group or groups), cross-links are introduced into the polymer and the polycondensation reaction is accelerated by (a) treating the compound(s) containing the aromatic group(s) with an aldehyde prior to the polycondensation, or (b) adding an aldehyde to the mixture undergoing polycondensation, or (c) treating the polycarbonate resulting from the polycondensation with analdehyde, with or without prior isolation of the polycarbonate. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, oenanthic aldehyde, palmitic aldehyde, hexadydrobenzaldehyde or benzaldehyde or it may be a substance yielding an aldehyde e.g. hexamethylene tetramine, paraformaldehyde or paracetaldehyde. The aldehyde may be used in combination with a quarternary ammonium compound. A large number of dihydroxy compounds are specified including aromatic dihydroxy compound, (especiallyl di-(monohydroxyaryl) -alkanes) alkylene glycols oxy-and thio-alkylene glycols and cycloaliphatic glycols. In examples (1) Phosgenewas passed into an aqueous solution containing 2 : 2- di (4- hydroxyphenyl) -propane, paraformaldehyde, sodium hydroxide and methylene chloride, then tetra -nbutyl ammonium chloride was added and the resulting dough purified to yield a polycarbonate; (2) A mixture of 2:2- di-(4- hydroxyphenyl)- propane, paraformaldehyde, sodium hydroxide and sodium dithionite was heated, the reaction mixture cooled, methylene chloride added and first phosgene and then tetra- (nbutyl)- ammonium iodide introduced and the polycarbonate precipitated from the methylene chloride with ethanol; (3) A powdered polycarbonate from 2 : 2- di- (4- hydroxyphenyl) propane was heated with paraformaldehyde and aqueous sodium hydroxide and the treated polycarbonate then heated to 254 DEG C.; (4) An aqueous solution of 2 : 2- di - (4- hydroxyphenyl)-propane, paraformaldehyde, sodium hydroxide and triethylbenzylammonium chloride was reacted with a methylene chloride solution of the bischlorocarbonate of 2: 2- di- (4-hydroxyphenyl)- propane. The polycarbonates are useful for the manufacture of threads, fibre, films, foils, and extrusion or injection moulded articles (e.g. rods and tubes). Specification 772,627 is referred to.
