Abstract

843,669. Delivering sheets in counted batches. PEMBROKE CARTON & PRINTING CO. Ltd. Nov. 13, 1958 [Nov. 13, 1957], No. 35401/57. Class 100(1) Apparatus for separating a stack of increasing sheet elements 5 into batches 6 by inserting separator elements comprises means for supplying a continuous length of flexible material 12, a blade 10 adapted to be moved against the material to lay a fold 11 of the material extending into a continuously increasing stack of sheet material, and means for withdrawing the blade so timed that the blade is not withdrawn until the stack has increased by an additional sheet or sheets laid on top of the folded material. The blade 10 extends outwardly from a head 14 which is supported by a bridge piece 15 of a support block carried by a bracket 17. The front plate 18 of the bracket 17 is positioned near the stack 5. A spool 8 of material 7 is supported by a bracket 19 depending from the bracket 17. The blade 10 is biased by a spring 22 into its retracted position. The bracket also carries an actuator 23 which is preferably a pneumatic jack supplied with compressed air, the supply being regulated by valve means (not shown) which is electrically controlled e.g. by a solenoid which is energized from a counting device at appropriate intervals. The valve means is adjusted so that the blade 10 does not return to its retracted position until after one or more further sheets have been laid on the stack. In order that when the blade 10 is advanced the folds 12 already made in the material are not shortened, a plate 24 is provided on rods 26 which extend into the bracket 17. The plate 24 is spring-urged towards the stack 5 but, when the blade 10 is retracted, is restrained from moving against the stack by a finger 29 depending from the head 14 which engages a hook-like member 28 extending from a cross head 27 attached to the rods 26. As the blade moves outwardly the plate 24 moves with it and presses the folds 12 firmly against the edge of the stack.
