The presence of magnetic or conductive deposits is determined by a pair of magnetically cored coil fixed relatively angularly and feeding amplifying and filtering circuits so as to respond transient magnetic field variations. The Specification indicates that in the absence of such deposits the transient magnetic fields are horizontally polarised and that the presence of such deposits introduces some degree of vertical polarisation. Accordingly on " A" coil and a " B " coil, both in two parts are mounted at right angles to each other on a rotatable axis 4. Each coil is mounted on a former consisting of iron laminations 2 and wooden spacers 3. The coils are tuned to frequencies of 450 and 500 cycles/sec respectively by condensers 7 in order to avoid coupling and each coil feeds an amplifier 8a, attenuator 9a, further amplifier 10a, filter 11a, rectifier 12a and integrator 13a and the outputs of the two amplifiers are compared in a differential unit 14 and indicated on a meter 15. A linometer 23 is mounted between the coils. In use, if no conductive or magnetic deposits are present the difference output of the two coils will be zero when they are in the position shown. A distorting deposit will mean that a minimum output from the coils will occur in a different position as indicated by the linometer. Specification 825,046 is referred to.
