A belt-grinding machine for large even surfaces, such as wood veneers, comprises a beam 56 which has an even and resiliently formed outer surface and presses against an endless circulatory or reciprocatory pressure band 53 disposed without an endless circulatory abrasive belt 18. The workpiece 15 is carried on a table 14 horizontally movable by means of rollers 13 beneath the abrasive belt 18, which is driven over pulleys 16, 17 by a motor 19, and the band 53 which is of strip-steel, fabric, plastic or similar material having on its outer surface thin strips of V; zig-zag or other shape formed of a material with a low frictional coefficient and a high resistance to wear, e.g. glass beads : guides may be provided for the pressure band. The beam 56 is pressed against the inner surface of the band 53 by a piston-and-cylinder device 58 and may consist of a rigid member 60, Fig. 6, on the lower surface of which is a pressure element 61 of foam or soft rubber, or a tube of rubber or plastic filled with liquid. A plate 62 of spring steel or other flexible material is disposed beneath the element and bears against a felt mat 66 which, in turn, bears against the belt 53. When the element is of tubular form, the pressure within can be controlled by a valve and a piston-and-cylinder device 65. The area of pressure between the workpiece and belt can be adjusted by longitudinally moving the mat by winding strips of fabric 67 attached to the mat on to and off rollers 68.
