Abstract

Textile filaments are sized with a non-aqueous solution of a benzine soluble copolymer produced from (a), an acid ester of an a , b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol containing more than 8 carbon atoms and (b), a neutral ester of a vinyl compound having an alkyl radical which contains more than 8 carbon atoms and an additional copolymerizable vinyl compound, (c). The term "vinyl" compound includes those compounds containing the group CH2\CH- in which one or more hydrogen atoms may be substituted. Compounds in the category (a) may be produced from maleic, fumaric or itaconic acids and decyl, dodecyl or octadecyl alcohols. Specified compounds for category (b) are vinyl stearate, isopropylcyclohexyl acrylate, dodecyl methacrylate and di (dodecyl) fumarate and for category (c), styrene and substituted styrenes, butadiene, isobutylene, vinyl acetate, ethylacrylate, methyl methacrylate and vinyl ethers. The proportions of the ingredients are such that the copolymers remain benzine soluble. Water-repellency may be conferred by including paraffins or waxes in the composition. Specification 783,677 is referred to.ALSO:Textile filaments are sized with a non-aqueous solution of a benzine soluble copolymer produced from (a), an acid ester of an a , b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol containing more than 8 carbon atoms, (b), a neutral ester of a vinyl compound having an alkyl radical which contains more than 8 carbon atoms and (c) an additional copolymerisable vinyl compound. The term "vinyl" compound includes those compounds containing the group CH2=CH- in which one or more hydrogen atoms may be substituted. Compounds in the category (a) may be produced from maleic, fumaric or itaconic acids and decyl, dodecyl or octadecyl alcohols. Specified compounds for category (b) are vinyl stearate, isopropyl-cyclohexyl acrylate, dodecyl methacrylate and di-(dodecyl) fumarate and for category (c), styrene and substituted styrenes, butadiene, isobutylene, vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and vinyl ethers. The proportions of the ingredients are such that the copolymers remain benzine soluble. The size may be removed by washing with soap or may remain on the material. Water-repellency may be conferred by including paraffins or waxes in the composition. The materials treated may be of cellulose acetate or regenerated cellulose filaments in the form of cakes or cross reels, hanks, warp yarns for taffetas or satins and crepe yarns. Specification 783,677 is referred to.
