Abstract

Furfurol is produced by putting a mixture of pentosan-containing vegetable material and monocalcium phosphate in a plurality of autoclaves connected in series, admitting steam to the first of these and passing it through the autoclaves in turn thus removing the furfurol as a vapour and causing volatile organic acids which are formed to pass through the autoclaves so that their concentration increases in successive autoclaves, the proportion of monocalcium phosphate charged to each of the autoclaves being successively reduced in proportion to the concentration of the acids therein. Preferably the pentosan-containing vegetable material is dried maize heads.
