Abstract

842,284. Granulating metals. SOUTH AFRICAN IRON & STEEL INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION Ltd. March 24, 1958 [April 4, 1957], No. 9394/58. Class 82(2) Irregularly shaped solid particles of oxidizable metals or alloys, e.g. of ferrosilicon, are rendered smooth and rounded by passage through a high temperature reverse flame, in which an annular fuel gas zone surrounds a zone of air, or air enriched with oxygen, or a mixture thereof with a small proportion of combustible gases. The particles may be fed into a burner comprising a nozzle 5 surrounded by a coaxial annular nozzle 7, the particles being induced from a supply pipe 3 into a Venturi 4 by a stream of oxygen enriched air and discharged therewith through the nozzle 5, whilst a combustible gas is fed to the nozzle 7 through pipe 6. The burner is mounted in the top wall 8 of a furnace 9 at the lower end of which the rounded particles are received into a water bath 14. In order to prevent the particles from sticking to the furnace wall heating or cooling gas is fed into the furnace through an annular slot 10 and through slots communicating with annular conduits 11, 12. Alternatively the furnace may be lined with polished stainless steel or vitreous enamelled steel. In an alternative apparatus, Fig. 3 (not shown), the product is collected in the dry state in a cyclone separator.
