Abstract

A durable anti-bacterial activity is imparted to synthetic or proteinaceous textile fabrics by treating them with a solution of neomycin or a salt thereof and then drying. Suitable salts of neomycin are the para-hydroxybenzoate, sulphanilate, tartrate, propionate, aconitate, phthalate, undecylenate, palmitate and stearate. The neomycin may be dissolved in water, methanol or butanol, and may be applied by padding, exhausting or spraying to give fabrics preferably containing at least 0.0001% by weight of neomycin. The fabrics may be dried at room temperatures or at temperatures as high as 350 DEG F. The treating solution may also contain a small amount of a colour stabilizer for neomycin, e.g. 0,2% by weight of sodium metabisulphite or 3% of sodium citrate, anti-fungal agents, colours, brighteners, wetting agents, softeners and perfumes. Woven, knitted or felted fabrics made of wool, silk, polyamides, polyesters, polyvinylidene chloride and acrylic fibres, such as polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, "Creslan" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Acrilan" (Registered Trade Mark), may be treated.ALSO:Bandages made from synthetic or proteinaceous fabrics are rendered bacteriostatic by treatment with a solution of neomycin or a salt thereof followed by drying. Suitable salts of neomycin are the para-hydroxy-benzoate, sulphanilate, tartrate, propionate, aconitate, phthalate, undecylenate, palmitate and stearate. The neomycin may be dissolved in water, methanol or butanol and may be applied by padding, exhausting or spraying to give fabrics preferably containing at least 0,0001% by weight of neomycin. The fabrics may be dried at room temperatures or at temperatures as high as 350 DEG F. The treating solution may also contain a small amount of a colour stabilizer for neomycin, e.g. 0,2% by weight of sodium meta bisulphite or 3% of sodium citrate, anti fungal agents, colours, brighteners, wetting agents, softeners and perfumes. Specified synthetic and proteinaceous fibres are wool, silk, polyamides, polyesters, polyvinylidene chloride and acrylic fibres, such as polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, "Creslan" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Acrilan" (Registered Trade Mark.)
