Abstract

842,170. Grinding and polishing. KLINGSPOR, C. July 4, 1957 [July 7, 1956; Jan. 11, 1957], No. 21199/57. Class 60. A rotary grinding or polishing unit com prises a central rotat able shaft 10 and a grinding or polishing bodv 19 mounted thereon by means of a structure which com prises a helical or stepped annular ril formed with a pair o: flanges engaging with corresponding grooves 20, 21 in the grinding body, means being provided on the shaft for clamping the assembly together. As shown in Fig. 1, the grinding body 19 is wound helically on the shaft, being located in position by the grooves 20, 21 in its edges engaging the flanges of a T-sectioned spring 15 also wound helically on the shaft. The body is held on the shaft between helically-faced bushes 13, 16. Instead of the body being in the form of a continuous band of flexible grinding material, it may be formed of separate segments of rigid material each equal to about half a convolution. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the spring 15 is replaced by a number of sleeves 25a, 26b &c., each having a T-sectioned helical flange which, when the sleeves are assembled together, form a continuous helix. The grinding body is formed from a series of elements 29a, 29b, 29c &c., having grooves for engaging with the helix. In the further modification shown in Fig. 3, rigid grinding elements 39a, 39b &c., of semicircular form are mounted on T-flanged sleeves 35a 35b &c. which are arranged in staggered formation. To obtain a certain resilience in the grinding body a layer of felt or rubber may be interposed between the end of the shaft and the grinding or polishing body and /or the structure on which it is mounted.
