Abstract

A composition comprises a homogenous mechanical mixture of from 65 to 87,5% by weight of one or more millable thermoplastic, cross-linked, high polymers of an ethylenically unsaturated compound having an apparent weight average molecular weight exceeding 5,000,000 with from 35 to 12,5% of one or more polyorganosiloxanes in which the organo group is a saturated group such as alkyl, aralkyl, or halo-substituted alkyl or aralkyl having a weight average molecular weight exceeding 150,000 and which is millable at a temperature sufficient to flux the high p polymer. Rubbers such as isobutylene-isoprene, styrene-butadiene, butadieneacrylonitrile copolymers; polyacrylics such as a terpolymer of ethylhenyl acrylate (butadiene and acrylonitrile); chlorosulphonated polyethylene; styrene and substituted styrene polymers crosslinked with divinylbenzene, or as a graft copolymer, are specified and the millable polyorganosiloxanes are preferably those of general formula:- <FORM:0841833/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 are methyl, ethyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, trichlorophenyl or phenonyphenyl. The mixtures are milled or masticated on rollers or in a Banbury mixer, if desired during the cross-linking stage at elevated temperature, or in a modification, the polyorganosiloxane is dispersed in the monomer prior to polymerising and cross-linking. Curatives may be sulphur and benzothiazyl sulphide and other additives such as zinc oxide, carbon black, stearic acid and fillers may be included.
