Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] A centrifugal governor suitable for mounting in the hub of a variable pitch propeller to adjust the pitch in order to maintain a constant speed of rotation comprises a flyweight 19 mounted so as to respond both to the centrifugal force thereon and to the inertia force which arises during a change of speed. The flyweight is carried by an arm 42 mounted on a fork 21 whereby it may pivot about an axis 20 and the fork 21 is so mounted that it can turn about an axis 22 which is at right angles to the axis 20 and to the axis 140 about which the whole assembly rotates. Thus the flyweight 19 can move, against a speeder spring 38 which is adjustable by a lever 11, in response to centrifugal force and can also move about the axis 22, against either of a pair of springs 28, 29, in response to inertia forces. Both of these movements of the flyweight are transmitted through a ball-ended, cranked extension 40 of the arm 42 to a member 14 which is linked to a valve 18 controlling the pitch change motor. A solenoid 15, which holds the member 14 in engagement with the extension 40, may be deenergized to allow a spring to move the member 14 away from the extension 40 and into engagement with a lever 51 through which the propeller may be controlled manually or automatically for, e.g. feathering the propeller or coarsening or reversing the pitch thereof. Movement of the flyweight about the axis 22 may be dampened by a dashpot. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement in which the flyweight instead of being rotatable about two axes at right angles to each other is mounted on a single, inclined axis.
