Abstract

841,716. Soldering. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO. Ltd. Aug. 22, 1958 [Sept. 2, 1957], No. 27691/57. Class 83 (4). Carbon bodies are joined by causing silicon and/or one or more metal silicides to intervene, under non-oxidizing conditions, between the surfaces to be joined and then cooling the joint. In an example a portion of reduced diameter on a tube of electrographite is inserted in a recess in another tube of electrographite to leave a circumferential groove between the tubes into which a paint made by suspending silicon powder in collodion diluted with acetone is poured. The joint is dried in air to evaporate the solvent and then heated by radio frequency induction in a vacuum to melt the silicon at 1410‹ C. In another example a composition comprising a mixture of molybdenum and silicon powders in collodion and. acetone is applied to two carbon bodies and the coated surfaces in close proximity are heated in a graphite tube resistance furnace in argon to form MoSi 2 at 1200‹ C. and to fuse the compound at 1900- 2100 ‹ C. In one modification the molybdenum in the last example is replaced by chromium and heating is carried out in vacuo so that on cooling the parts are joined by a mixture of chromium disilicide and silicon and in another modification the molybdenum is replaced by zirconium hydride which provides zirconium on heating so that on cooling the parts are joined by a mixture of silicon and zirconium silicide. The silicide may be included in a suspension for application to the parts. The joint may be dipped into a melt of the silicon and/or silicides. The silicide may also be a silicide of a refractory metal such as tungsten, titanium or tantalum. According to the Provisional Specification one or more borides of molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, zirconium, tantalum or chromium may be caused to intervene under non-oxidizing conditions between the surfaces to be joined.
