Abstract
841,707. Condensers. RADIO HEATERS Ltd. July 2, 1958 [July 8, 1957; Jan. 21, 1958], Nos. 21563/57 and 2052/58. Class 37. In a wound or roll type condenser wound so as to leave an axial aperture and including dielectric films having a loss factor less than 0À002 at 1 Mc/s the electrodes which may be of a single metal, or an alloy, or may consist of laminated foils, or a foil of one metal having a surface of another, are composed of metal which does not have, or develop, a high resistance oxide surface film. Examples given are tin, copper, brass, tinned copper, silver, silver plated copper, gold, platinum and aluminium which has been copper clad or silvered. A thickness of the windings up to of the inside diameter of the former is stated to give good heat dissipation. A condenser 10, Fig. 1, comprises metal foils 14, 16, interspaced by polystyrene strips 18, 20 on a core or former 12, and the ends of the foils are turned over as at 22 and 24 so that when stacked around a hollow tube as in the tank condenser Fig. 3 the condensers are connected in series, external connections and connections between the stacks being taken off by metal plates 32 and 36 respectively. The condensers are held by draw bars 48 and bolts 50 and tappings are taken out to terminals from copper plates 46 placed between adjacent connectors. Water cooling is provided. An alternative winding arrangement having three electrodes in one layer and two in the adjacent layer is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown), and an alternative coaxial stacking arrangement wherein small units are stacked within larger units and have a coaxial output connection is also described. The condensers may be immersed in silicone fluid or medicinal paraffin and be water cooled. The alternative use of polythene and polytetrafluoroethylene for the dielectric is also suggested.
