Abstract

749,438. Capacitors. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Nov. 7, 1952 [Nov. 14, 1951], No. 28146/52. Class 37. In a roll-type capacitor, each electrode is in contact with a metal layer extending at rightangles to the roll axis, and a cooling medium is circulated over an extended length through a device which is mechanically connected to the layer. The length is at least equal to the periphery of the layer. Figs. 1 and 2 show a rolled capacitor 1 comprising foils 13 and 14 which are in contact with metal layers 3 and 2 respectively. Metal tubes 4 and 12 in the form of cooling tubes are placed on or in the metal layers 3 and 2 and constitute the connecting leads to the capacitor, connections being made to metal bars 7, each of which is in contact with one of the tubes 4 or 12. A non-conducting cooling fluid is preferably used, and insulating portions 9 may be provided to isolate the connections from the rest of the fluid flow system. The tubes may be spiral in form, the cooling fluid entering at the centre of the spiral to increase the cooling at the central portion of the capacitor, which may comprise a ceramic core, which projects to form a centre for the tube spiral assembly. Cooling is facilitated by making the diameter of the roll large relative to its length. The tubes may be silver-plated, and may be soldered in place after formation of the metal layer; alternatively the layer may consist of tin which is melted when the tubes, previously heated, are applied to the layer. The dielectric material may consist of polystyrene.
