Abstract

Compositions suitable for forming oriented filaments having a metallic lustre rather than a highly reflective shiny surface comprise a normally crystalline vinylidene chloride copolymer and 0,5 to 3 wt. % thereof of each of (i) an alkali-metal salt of an oxy-acid of chlorine or bromine and (ii) an alkali-metal salt of an oxyacid of phosphorus. Copolymers specified are copolymers of a predominant amount by weight of vinylidene chloride with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile. Suitable salts (i) are sodium chlorate and bromate; the deficiencies of iodine oxy salts are explained. Suitable salts (ii) are mono- and disodium phosphate and phosphite, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, pentasodium triphosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The preferred alkali metals for both salts (i) and (ii) are sodium and potassium. Pigments may be added to the composition. The composition may be heated and the molten mixture expressed through a die to form a continuous filament which is oriented by stretching, during which tiny bubbles or voids in the filaments are elongated. In an example a composition is prepared from (by weight):-400 parts of an 85/15 vinylidene chloride vinyl chloride copolymer; 8 parts of 2-hydroxy-5-chlorobenzophenone; 28 parts of alpha, alpha1-diphenyl diethyl ether; 1 part of disodium phosphate dissolved in water; and 0,5 parts of sodium bromate dissolved in water. The mixture is vacuum dried at 70 DEG C., extruded as 0,011 filaments, supercooled and stretched to 4 times the extruded length.
