[Also in Groups XXIX and XXXV] A member 1 such as the table of a machinetool, is maintained in a given plane at a given distance from a base or bed 2 by supplying oil under pressure from a pump 7 to at least three non-aligned orifices 3 (only one of which is shown), and controlling the oil pressure to each orifice in response to deviation of the corresponding part of the member 1 from the required spacing relative to the base 2. Upstream of each orifice 3 is a fixed replica orifice 6, to the same or different scale, so that a predetermined part of the total pressure drop between the pump and an annular discharge passage 4 surrounding the orifice 3, takes place across the orifice 6 when the member 1 is at the desired spacing from the base 2. The pressures before the orifice 6 and in the discharge passage 4 are fed to a computer 9, which produces an hydraulic or electrical &c. signal proportional to the sum of the two pressures, divided by an amount dependent upon the scale relationship between the orifices, so that the signal is proportional to an intermediate pressure between the two orifices when the member 1 and base 2 are at the desired spacing. The signal and the intermediate pressure are compared in a servo unit 10, which makes any necessary correction by action on the pump 7 when a separate pump for each orifice 3 is provided, or by action on the flow path between the pump and the orifice concerned when a single pump supplies all of the orifices.
