Abstract

840,584. Making longitudinally perforated plates; casting. VEREINIGTE LEICHTMETALL-WERKE G.m.b.H. March 21, 1958, No. 9196/58. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2). In a method of making metal articles, e.g. heat-exchanger or refrigeration elements or heat-transfer plates for moulding plastics having a thickness above 2 mm. and having passageways extending in the plane of the article, the body is cast about at least one core of material of lesser resistance than that of the metal of the article, and passageways are drilled through the body along the cores, thereby simultaneously removing the material of the cores. An ingot of metal is continuously or otherwise cast around cores having rectangular, circular or elliptical cross-section, and, after milling the main surfaces plane, may be rolled to reduce the thickness, e.g. to 20 mm., Fig. 2a. The edges of the sheet are then trimmed, and passageways, e.g. 10 mm. diameter formed by drilling out the cores, the drilled holes being slightly larger than the dimensions of the core. It is stated that by this method the diameter of the passageway may be reduced relative to its length, as compared with conventional drilling from the D solid, e.g. - ratios of less than <SP>1</SP>/40 are obtain- L able. The article may also be produced by drilling directly from a body with inserts cast in, i.e. without reduction by rolling. The surface of a mould plate may be provided with longitudinal and transverse ribs and grooves by milling after rolling to thickness. The article may be made from copper, beryllium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, scandium or titanium or alloys of those metals such as AlMg, Si and the core material may be moulding-sand, graphite, glass fibre, asbestos or slag wool, or an inert metal or alloy. The article may be annealed, quenched, or aged before or after drilling, e.g. aluminium may be annealed at 500‹ C. after drilling. Long bars or rods having passageways therethrough may also be made.
